As much as i hate global corp, a farmer with 40+ employees is not a farmer, it's a industrial agricultural corporation of its own.

Well, that was a fun rabbit hole to go down- thanks, OP! Short version is Huy Fong had a direct relationship with Underwood to grow the peppers they needed and STRONGLY implied they would only buy peppers from Underwood for their future needs. Huy Fong found cheaper "pepper mash"

Oh no the monopoly don’t like it when there’s competition

It is poor business to have only 1 supplier for your main ingredient. That is a brittle supply chain. Now Huy Fong is in FO stage.

Sriracha is not a registered brand. Only the rooster logo is. That's why anyone can name its chilli sauce Sriracha. I buy and use the Flying Goose Sriracha, made in Thailand, and it's from a different company (don't know about the farmer though)

It was more complicated than that. The owner was getting old and so he made subsidiary company for building the peppers and gave it to daughter in law. She fucked it all up by chasing price cutts. The original farmer now makes his own sauce and it's as good as original.

I love it. Hopefully the farmer is now supplying Sriracha's competitor.
