Tesla's Software-Locked Hardware Sparks Debate on Digital Ownership

Tesla's Software-Locked Hardware Sparks Debate on Digital Ownership - Technology on Aviaclip

A viral social media post highlights a Tesla feature upgrade menu where owners are prompted to pay $200 to activate rear heated seats. The image illustrates a growing trend in the automotive industry where physical hardware is pre-installed in vehicles but remains locked behind a software paywall. This practice has sparked significant public discussion regarding the ethics of digital ownership, the cost of mass production versus consumer value, and the implications of paying for features that are already physically present in a purchased product.

With the same argument you could justify not paying for any software or content… it costs nothing to use it. you pay for beeing enabled to use it…

I have built cars since I was a teenager. I am not afraid My Father hunted this forest before me. My name is Jaguar Paw. I am a hunter. This is my forest. And my sons will hunt it with their sons after I am gone.

welcome to mass production, cheaper then making 10 slightly different cars. You can have the car in any color that you want, as long as it is black

On the other hand: you usually pay for those extras. Manufactures have to build them in, requireing extra line space or atleast additional manufacturing steps. having them build in allready and lock the feature and lowering the price is a more cost effectife and efficient way for

FYSA this is from 2022, and after backlash it was removed. Now all Teslas have them factory installed and turned on.

And apparently, unlocking this feature without paying is a violation of the DMCA. One of the worst laws to exist. And in the creators word of this law, it has been twisted into something it was never meant to be and it's grotesque
