The Radioactive Lone Ranger Atomic Bomb Ring from Kix Cereal
In the late 1940s, Kix cereal offered a unique mail-in promotion: the Lone Ranger Atomic Bomb ring. Available for 15 cents and a box top, the toy was actually a functional spinthariscope. It contained a small amount of Polonium-210, a highly toxic radioactive substance. By removing the tail cap of the bomb-shaped charm and looking through a lens in a dark room, children could observe flashes of light caused by the radioactive decay of Polonium-210 into Lead-206. This vintage cereal premium serves as a striking example of how consumer safety standards and the public perception of radioactive materials have shifted significantly over the decades.
