Sony Argues in Court That Consumers Do Not Own Their Digital Games - Interesting on Aviaclip

A recent legal development has sparked debate regarding digital ownership in the gaming industry. Sony has explicitly argued in court that consumers do not own the games they purchase, but rather acquire a license to access the software under the company's terms and conditions. This stance highlights the distinction between purchasing a physical copy of a game and acquiring a digital version, which is subject to the platform holder's control. The argument suggests that users are paying for the right to play the software rather than obtaining permanent ownership of the product, raising questions about long-term access and consumer rights in an increasingly digital-first gaming market.

I don't want to own the game as in legal ownership of the IP. But I do want to own it in the sense that if I boot up a fully compatible Windows 11 VM 20 years from now, I can still play it.

Yes, you do not own THE GAME, but it is reasonable to own a COPY of the game that you can use whenever you want
