A Rare Encounter With a Giant Pyrosome in the Ocean

This footage captures a diver encountering a pyrosome, a free-floating, tube-like marine creature. Often mistaken for a single organism, a pyrosome is actually a colony made up of thousands of tiny individual organisms known as zooids. These zooids are embedded in a gelatinous, transparent structure that allows the colony to drift through the open ocean. Because they are bioluminescent and can grow to significant sizes, they are sometimes referred to as 'sea pickles' or 'fire bodies.' This video provides a close-up look at the unique, translucent texture of the colony as it moves through the water.
