A Nostalgic Look at Infrared File Sharing on Early Mobile Phones

A Nostalgic Look at Infrared File Sharing on Early Mobile Phones - Interesting on Aviaclip

This image highlights a classic mobile technology experience from the early 2000s: infrared data transfer. The Sony Ericsson phone screen displays a menu option to 'Send via infrared,' a method that required users to perfectly align the infrared ports of two devices to exchange ringtones, contact information, or images. Unlike modern wireless standards like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, infrared was a line-of-sight technology, meaning any physical obstruction or movement would interrupt the transfer process. This nostalgic snapshot serves as a reminder of the technical patience required before the era of seamless cloud syncing and high-speed wireless connectivity.

I used a Thinkpad around 2007 with IR to backup SMS and phone numbers. Crude but it worked.

Those phones were so cool and exciting. There was always something completely new and groundbreaking to discover with a new phone.

Fuck, I loved infrared. Before USB and Bluetooth it was the most reliable way, but slow.
